Trail from the Valorde-Canth Road to Untharin Abbey

A short distance west of Canth along the Valorde-Canth Road, a Trail strikes off to the south across open country. To find the trailhead, travel south from Canth about 150 lengths to where the Road bends westward toward Valorde, then proceed another 150 lengths along the Road to the west.

The Trail runs due south for the first 300 lengths or so, and then gradually begins to angle off toward the southwest slightly for the next 400 lengths. By this time you will see Mount Untharin drawing closer in the south, off to your left. As you approach the mountain, the Trail turns southeast toward the peak, and winds its way along the western flank of the mountain for another 500 lengths. From the side of the mountain you will see the stone ring-wall surrounding the Abbey, and the Abbey itself, below you in its pleasant valley to your right.

The Trail descends westward down from the mountainside, and then climbs up onto the slight plateau on the valley floor where the ancient Untharin Abbey has stood for ages. The miraculous powers of regeneration that adventurers enjoy in Pernica reach their pinnacle here, where the slain awake again as if from slumber to resume their quests. Upon your approach to the Abbey, you may note two conical hills a little distance southwest of the Abbey's outer stone wall. If these two prominences appear suspiciously regular and smooth, the sharpness of your vision is not in vain, for these are the mysterious Greater and Lesser Cairns, nearly as high as neighboring mountains, but entirely constructed by ancient residents of this valley. Legend says that inside each of the conical heights, an ancient king who ruled in Hadren before it bore that name is sleeping. The same magic that rules their slumbers may account for the powers of regeneration that work their wonders inside the nearby Abbey.

At all events, whether you awake in the Abbey after a disasterous turn of fortune or are simply passing through as a traveller, be sure to go around the back of the Abbey and take a deep drink of marvellous, cold water from the Untharin Well! Many an adventurer can testify not only to the invigorating refreshment of that draught, but also to its restorative powers. You may hike over hills and dales for days afterwards without tiring in the slightest. To the south of the Abbey, from the crest of Thistle Mountain beyond the Cairns (see my map), the traveller will be able to see the old Arena where ancient gladiators from Hadren fought spectacular battles--the Arena and the Abbey are actually only a short hike apart.
