Road from Hadren north along the East Bank of the Clarion River

From the great West Gate of the city, you must do a little hunting to find the ancient, abandoned and currently dis-used Eastway. In ancient times, at the peak of the glory of the city that once sprawled at the mouth of the Clarion, this road ran out from the heavily-fortified North Gate (also known as the Rivergate), on the east bank of the Clarion River itself. However, with the descent of all these lands into hard and evil times, the Rivergate was completely sealed up and the smaller, more easily-defended West Gate became the only access point into Hadren other than the harbor mouth at the southwest corner of the city. Over the following centuries, the once-bustling Eastway fell into disrepair, and has almost entirely disappeared for many lengths in the vicinity of the Hadren wall. No trace of it can be found near the city at all today.

About a century ago, some attempt was made to re-connect the Eastway to the Hadren West Gate, and a tiny stretch of this newer (but less-well-constructed) road can be found north of the city on the west bank of the river, but again most traces of this route also have vanished and been over-grown.

This new road forded the river some distance north of the city wall, and from the river crossing there, the remains of the Eastway still run along the east bank of the river, northward to the junction with the Canth-Clarion River Road. Along the northward course of the Eastway, travellers will see the formidable Dragon Ridge Tower still standing near the summit of Dragonback Ridge to the east, so-named not for any dragons in the neighborhood, but because this line of rugged hills (the crest exceeds elevation 100 in places) itself is said to resemble a sleeping dragon stretched across the landscape, sleeping away the centuries. It is a strenuous climb up to the tower, and the wind can be keen, so those interested in such sight-seeing should bring warm outer garments.

Further north, near the Canth River Road junction, A small and hardy community, Eastway Junction, somehow hangs on and survives a short distance down the Eastway to the south--you may find ale and a bed in the old Inn there, and a Smithy offers some hope of repairs to weapons and horse-shoes. If you follow the Eastway beyond this junction, it quickly fades away into the grass and vanishes; a bit further on to the north, one reaches the rushing stream of the Clarion East Fork, rushing and foaming down from the mountains far to the north and east--crossing here is hazardous, cold, and leads nowhere of any interest. It is better to cross the river at the Canth Road ford, and venture northward on the western shore of the main North Fork of the river if you must; there is little reason for anyone to proceed in that direction, however, unless they need practice slaughtering hordes of orcs.
