For the discerning traveller who crosses the great river from Hadren and passes into western lands, some helpful words are offered here about ways through the countryside, landmarks, places of shelter and refreshment, but likewise also dangers and warnings. The routes all take their names from their destinations, running outward into the west from Hadren itself. All descriptions here match the locations shown on my companion drawing of these western lands, Bunthorne's Western Map.
In addition to the main roads in these western lands, several important trails begin at various points along the roads and lead to fascinating out-of-the-way destinations that adventurous travellers may enjoy. Some are very close to the main roads, while others are very remote and require courage and care to locate. For trails that end at interesting landmarks, these trail notes include descriptions of the landmarks themselves as well!
More strange and exotic than any of these Roads or Trails, a third type of route deserves description for the most adventurous and hardy of travellers in these western lands. Long ago, when the Kingdom of the Dwarves flourished in the northern mountains, marvellous passageways and galleries were carved deep through the hearts of many of these mountains. When the old kingdoms failed, and the peoples grew scarce and dwarves at length were driven from the mountains by all manner of evil folk, these labyrinths fell into disuse and were forgotten, but a few are still known to us. These teem with orcs and goblins, and perhaps fouler things yet, but what is known of the passages is recorded here.
When visiting some of the settlements in these western lands, be sure to look up some of the friendly and helpful residents who make these places their home. You will be sure of a warm welcome, and may also get valuable advice and assistance in your travels or other business. For your convenience each settlement or other interesting place is described in detail here.
The humble scribbler of these lines of guidance begs forgiveness of all travellers for any imprecisions and mistakes in the narratives above, and begs that observations tending to improve the accounts be shared with him, the hobbit Bunthorne, at his residence behind Appledore's store in Fairfield. I will improve and update these notes and the map at regular intervals!
