Ye know not my name, for I play no important role but serve to chronicle the adventures of the "Fellowship of Elennar". Who is Elennar ye ask? Nay, Elennar tis no person, Elennar tis a sword. A sword rumored to shine in battle with the fire of a star. So sit down in a booth in my inn, have an ale and listen to this story of great adventure...
Located
in the forested valley of the river Inn, nestled in the mountainous alps our
story begins. Long before the time of our story Schloss Matzen was a Roman tower
fortress. This fortress once helped the Roman Empire control the Inn river valley.
Now it is home to Lord Balar and Lady Delora.
Dawn cast an orange glow over Schloss Matzen. Kicking up dust, a messenger on horseback galloped up the path to the castle. As the messenger burst through the gate he called, "Where is m'lady?". Everyone at Schloss Matzen knew that if not used with a specific person "m'lady" meant the Lady Delora, wife of Lord Balar. A fairly tall woman, with light auburn brown hair and blue eyes, standing nearby turned to the messenger. Rhydoc pointed to the tower, "Sire, I believe she is in the tower admiring the sunrise."
Mistress Rhydoc turned and walked to the chapel. Inside she found Leyton staring intently at a game board opposite from one of the young female acolytes. "Leyton, put away that frivolous pastime and come pray with me. A messenger has just arrived and rushed to see m'lady. Let us pray this is fortunate news and nothing of ill nature." Leyton and Rhydoc kneeled before the alter and bowed their heads in silent prayer.
Leaping up the steps two at a time the messenger arrived at the top gasping for breath, "M'lady, I bring thee an urgent letter from Lady Elaine Le Blanke". He handed Lady Delora a message tube bearing the seal of Elaine Le Blanke (Elaine the White).
Lady Delora,
I hope this message finds thee in good health. I write this from my deathbed with the hope that you will understand the urgency and importance of this matter. I have seen the dream of my son, Lancelot, come to ruin. Forsoothe with the passing of King Arthur, the lords have fallen to dispute and warring amongst themselves.
As you know, without the wise guidance of women, men would slaughter themselves needlessly in the name of glory. Albion has need of a fine leader such as your husband, Lord Balar. Perhaps with your guidance you could persuade him to come to Albion, an outsider like Lord Balar might be successful at uniting the Briton Lords. He might be able to reach beyond the local squabbles and unite them for a common cause. For indeed Albion faces a far greater threat. From our frontiers we are now threatened by monsters, elves, dwarves, trolls, kobolds and other uncivilized horrors.
Sincerely,
Elaine Le Blanke
Delora looked off into the landscape, now brightening with the rising sun. She smiled and turned to descend the stairs.
"M'lord,
Schloss Matzen is a fine castle and an enjoyable home. This valley is beautiful
and we live a good life. Still, something seems to be missing. I miss our journey's
of old, the travel, the adventure, the new people to meet. Do you not long for
the glory of battle again?", said Delora.
Smiling Balar replied, "Aye, m'lady indeed our life is fine but tis perhaps a bit too quiet for us. Have you an idea?"
"Elaine Le Blanke has written to me of the plight of Albion m'lord. Their king, Arthur, has passed and their land is sorely in need of a leader. They are hard pressed by foes from Midgard and Hibernia. They need someone to lead them in battle."
Grinning Balar looked into Delora's eyes, "And you think I'm the one to do that? We don't have the funding to raise an army. We'd only be able to take a small company and then we'd need to find someone with connections in Camelot to raise the funding for an army."
A gleam came into Balar's eyes. He thought to himself, "Enough of this paperwork of managing a castle. I shall return to the glory of the battlefield."
Balar commanded his steward, "Send for Jakey, I shall have need for my trusted scout. And inform Rhidd and Rutrho that their services will be needed too. With a such a journey to make, we will not be able to bring sufficient equipment and supplies. Their skills in crafting will be needed in Albion to equip the army I shall raise. Contact Geeon and Rowien, I'm sure their arcane knowledge will be useful. Inform Lady Rhydoc to prepare for a journey. Ask Killarney to assemble with the others in the Knight's Room for a special dinner."
Assembled
in the Knight's Room of Schloss Matzen, Balar addressed his friends. "I
have need of your services in the field once again. Word has reached us of the
passing of King Arthur of Albion. I intend to travel to these distant lands
to raise an army and unite the feuding Lords of Briton. Who will join me on
this adventure?"
Rhydoc answered softly, "M'lord, you know we will all follow you wherever you may lead us."
Balar thrust his sword into the air, "Rally to Elennar!"
"To Elennar!", responded everyone in unison.
Thus the "Fellowship of Elennar" was formed and set forth for the distant lands of Albion.
